Diamond Fireplace Celebrates 35 Years Serving Calgary
October 9, 2018
When Kent Greves’ father, Gary Greves, started Diamond Fireplace & Stone in 1983, the company offered customers a small selection of half a dozen wood burning fireplaces.
A lot has changed in 35 years.
While the business continues to focus on customer satisfaction and quality products as it did in the beginning, today’s Diamond Fireplace boasts an impressive selection of only the best brands in the industry.
“Diamond has grown with Calgary,” says Kent Greves, vice- president of Diamond Fireplace & Stone. “We want to be the guys who are the best resource for whoever needs a fireplace or stonework.” They are well on their way to achieving that.
Designers, contractors, new home builders and retail customers all know that Diamond has the expertise, experience and product lines that translate into the perfect fireplace or stone finishing for their space.
Over the years, the company has evolved and expanded from wood burning units to include gas and electric fireplaces and accessories, barbeques, HVAC, antique and retro kitchen appliances, and outdoor firepits and stoves. It is also a leading supplier of quality manufactured stone with a wide range of colours and styles for home exteriors, interior accents and fireplace finishings.
“We are the company that introduced Centurion Stone out of Nashville to the Calgary market,” Greves says.
“It started over 25 years ago with us convincing builders to put a bit of stone on the corner of the garage and it has expanded to where you can see lots of homes with full facades of stone.”
Diamond’s professionals both provide and install the stone, and there is sure to be something for every taste and style in the catalog. From castle to fieldstone, stack to ledge stone, rubble to river rock, Centurion Stone can accommodate every design need of Diamond’s customers. Whether clients are redesigning facades or adding rock to a replace feature, Greves is proud to be the one-stop shop.
“Our showroom is pretty unmatched in the city for what we can display in fireplaces and our stone products,” he says.
The 5,000+ square foot showroom is the jewel of the recent move to the 15 Street northeast location. After more than 20 years in the previous storefront, Diamond relocated and has the space and layout to do it’s incredible products justice.
The showroom is a world of possibilities featuring more than 70 working replace displays and extensive stone samples.
Clients can walk through the displays and find a style that fits their tastes, and they are encouraged to return often. Diamond is always renovating the displays to ensure the newest and most popular products are featured in the showroom.
Diamond has the best products from the top manufacturers, many of which are Canadian. With high-end replaces from Town & Country Luxury Fireplaces that offer gorgeous clean designs, the artful and innovative designs of Montigo replaces, the stylish and modern wood burning replaces manufactured by Renaissance Fireplaces, and top-of-the-
line Napoleon barbeques and replaces, Diamond has it all.
“We’ve been able to align ourselves with good companies, and we can see what’s coming down the line and plan for it,” says Richard Fankhanel, president of Diamond Fireplaces & Stone. “We like to stay on top of market trends.”
The latest trends can be seen throughout the showroom, most notably in the lines of linear fireplaces.
These long, rectangular electric replaces are beautiful art pieces as much as they are design elements. Clients can change the colour of the flames flickering in these built-in or wall- mounted pieces with the click of a remote control. While they don’t throw off the heat of a wood or gas replace, the linear designs function more as an art installation that doubles as
a space heater, giving off around 5,000 BTUs. These units are perfect additions to condos or small spaces and continue to be a top seller for Diamond and a growing trend in the market.
Diamond also offers modern wood fireplaces that are more beautiful, efficient, and airtight than those Kent’s father could have ever imagined when he started the company decades ago.
For those preferring convenience over tradition, Diamond also carries gas inserts to convert replaces from wood burning to gas. With the convenience of heat with the flick of a switch, along with the vast selection of beautiful units available, gas fireplaces continue to be very popular with Calgary customers. The modern designs are aesthetic as well as warm, and the fans are quiet, so they can spread heat without interrupting the cozy, comforting atmosphere.
Regardless of the style or fuel source, Diamond ensures its products are safe. Many of the high-end fireplaces the company carries are designed with extra panes of specialty glass or safety screens to give parents and pet owners peace of mind that the fireplace is safe to touch. Diamond Fireplaces & Stone cares about clients and goes above and beyond to get them exactly what they want and need.
“Another niche market that we offer is custom fireplaces. We’ve done custom fireplaces in malls and hotels as well as individual customer designs,” says Fankhanel.
It all comes down to ensuring customers are happy, which means carrying on a relationship once the sale and installation is complete. Diamond services the products it sells; knowledgeable technicians are available to do maintenance and repairs to ensure products are in top shape. Technicians check to make sure the valves, thermocouple, and switches are in peak order and that everything is clean and well-kept, so clients are ready to enjoy their fireplace when the weather turns.
But with Diamond’s products, clients don’t have to wait until winter. There is a unit for every room, even if that room doesn’t have walls. With an impressive selection of gas and propane fire pits and tables, wood stoves and outdoor fireplaces, Diamond helps clients create a fantastic and comfortable outdoor living space.
“We sell a lot of electric radiant heaters to new homes that have an outdoor living area,” says Greves. “People use the fireplace for ambiance and use the heaters to warm their bodies.”
The few Napoleon backyard barbeques and accessories featured in the showroom are a mere sample of what Diamond carries. The company can bring in any Napoleon product, so clients can achieve their perfect backyard paradise.
Diamond has been serving the needs of Calgary clients since 1983 and with the new location and spectacular showroom of products, it is determined to continue that tradition.
While the market has changed in 35 years, Diamond’s dedication to excellence and customer service never will. That’s why, inside and out, Calgary designers, architects, and retail customers know where to find the best fireplaces and manufactured stone products in the city—for its many repeat customers, Diamond Fireplace & Stone is the only place in town.

The ultimate in luxury fireplaces has arrived in Calgary! Introducing Flare Linear Frameless Fireplaces.
Flare Linear Frameless Luxury Fireplaces have arrived in Calgary just in time for the snowy weather. Flare has really been shaking up the international gas fireplace market, and for good reason.
Their mission is to make the impossible, possible and it looks like they’ve managed to redefine Linear Frameless Fireplaces, raising the bar for luxury fireplaces in Calgary.
In addition to an impressive array of features and functions that would impress any engineer, Flare fireplaces possess an undeniable wow factor.
So, what’s so special about the Flare Linear Frameless Luxury Fireplaces Fireplace?
There are five major aspects that make the Flare fireplace a stand out.
The first is Flare Fireplace’s unique heat redirection system.
Until now, fireplace owners needed to be mindful about placing electronics, televisions, art and other objects too close, or above their fireplace due to the heat emanating from the unit.
Previously, luxury gas fireplaces in Calgary had to be placed quite a distance away from say, a flat screen tv.
Precautions with children and pets had to be taken to avoid accidental burns or injuries from touching certain areas of the fireplace either at all, or for prolonged periods.
Flare promises an entirely unwanted heat-free experience which it accomplishes in two ways.
The first is a double glass technology. Two panes of glass separate the fire from touch and the Flare fireplace has built in blowers which actively cool the external pane of glass, making it safe for a brief touch.
These blowers then direct heat elsewhere, where it’s wanted, into the fireplace enclosure, which then vents into the room thru a required air-space or vent. This amazing regulation of heat allows for “Cold Wall” above fireplace, perfect for mounting a TV or art above. This makes the Flare fireplace next level safe for both precious art and electronics as well as children and pets.
The optional dual glass front creates a completely clean and modern look.
This eliminates the need for screens! The second unique, state of the art function is the totally see through frame and screen.
It’s really quite exceptional and has to be seen to appreciate the modern look and feel. It almost appears that the fire is floating on air!
Those that place a premium on the modern, minimalist aesthetic, will find that Flare luxury fireplaces suits even the most discerning tastes in Calgary.

Before You Buy An Electric Fireplace Online – Read This Beginners Guide To Three Popular Options.
Electric fireplaces are growing in popularity as an easy and cost reduced alternative to installing wood burning or gas burning fireplaces. Before you buy an electric fireplace online, you’ll want to keep reading.
Below you’ll find a handy guide of the three most popular types of electric fireplace, their functions, pros and cons, price points and how to plan for installation.
Buy An Electric Fireplace Online: Options Under $1500 and 150 lbs
There are a few different types of electric fireplace, each with different features suitable for different scenarios.
The first is arguably the easiest to buy and install, and many models are available at the lower price points. Indeed, top quality brands are available under $1500 CDN.
The wall hanging electric fireplace can come in various sizes, some no bigger than a wall covering, yet heats up to 400 sq feet with a dazzling array of flame colours and insert options. Think rocks, faux logs, crystal rocks, faux embers and more.
Often placed on a focal wall, in place of a painting or photograph, electric hanging fireplaces have been described as moving art. A long time favourite of interior designers, hanging fireplaces add an element of “wow” to just about any space in a a home or office.
The larger models, up to an incredible 100” long, are often used for bigger homes or commercial spaces, in waiting areas or at reception.
If you’re looking for the a modern aesthetic that provides the ambiance of a fireplace with minimal inconvenience or effort, this may be the best kind of electric fireplace to buy online.
Another pro to this type of electric fireplace is that they don’t usually weigh that much, under 150 lbs even for a 72” length, which means it can be shipped inexpensively and in most cases you won’t need a professional installer.
You’ll still want to follow the installation instructions carefully though; ensuring you are following framing, clearances, and proper electrical requirements. Each model will come with it’s own specifications that we recommend you read prior to purchasing your electric fireplace online.
The last thing you want is to learn on the day your fireplace arrives that your space isn’t suitable for what you had envisioned.
Buy An Electric Fireplace Online: Double Sided
Double sided fireplaces provide two times the coziness and glow of a one sided fireplace.
A double sided electric fireplace is the next step up in investment and logistics, but in our opinion, the end result is well worth it for the additional benefits:
Space & Light:
A two or three sided electric fireplace provides one of the most appealing ways to divide two rooms while maintaining a spacious, airy feel.
Anchor Point:
Completely open concept spaces can feel unanchored without a focal point. A double sided fireplace can unite living and dining spaces by drawing the eye to the glow of the customizable flames.
Privacy:
A clever way to let in some light and space without compromising privacy, a double sided fireplace is a favorite go between from master bedroom to ensuites to walk in closet.
Logistics of a double sided fireplace:
The two sided fireplace will provide heat for a 400 – 500 square foot space, and like it’s wall hanging cousin doesn’t require gas hookups. The dual or triple sided fireplace is designed to sit flush to the wall, so it will require professional installation in drywall, a stone mock chimney or other surface.
Surprisingly light, many models of dual or triple sided electric fireplace still fit under the 150lb weight we consider relatively easy to deliver and move.
Priced from two to three times the price of the wall hanging electric fireplace, you can still get incredible value from some of the top manufacturers like Napoleon and Amantii.
Buy An Electric Fireplace: An Insert
What is an electric fireplace insert?
Inserts are inserted into an existing wood burning fireplace
An insert mimics the more traditional styling of a hearth than the wall hanging electric fireplaces.
Typically, inserts are more square than the rectangular shape of the linear wall hanging electric fireplaces.
These are a great solution to those who no longer wish to use their wood burning fireplace
They require more logistical installation considerations than the wall hanging fireplaces, but less than the dual sided; they’re a nice in between option.
If you’re converting from a wood-burning fireplace you’ll find an insert considerably warmer, less effort to use and more energy efficient.
Sizes are typically around 33’ to 40’ and they can still weigh below 150lbs.
Buy An Electric Fireplace: Do Your Homework
Whether you choose a wall hanging, multi sided or insert, before you buy an electric fireplace online, confirm the shipping costs and timeline, whether or not you’ll need to pay taxes, what happens should the electric fireplace arrive damaged, what the return and warranty policy is as well the reputation and reviews of the supplier and manufacturer.
You should be able to enjoy your investment for years to come, so as a rule and where possible, opt to spend a little more for a reputable brand.

7 Reasons To Own An Electric Fireplace In Calgary:

7 Reasons To Own An Electric Fireplace In Calgary:
While Spring struggles to take hold, there are plenty of chilly days and evenings, where snuggling up to a cozy fireplace in Calgary sounds like a great way to end the day.
However the traditional expense, need for renovations and maintenance requirements of a wood burning or gas fireplace have held some Calgary residents back from enjoying the simple comforts of their very own fireplace.
Whether you’re renting your home, or just don’t want to commit to an installation, or simply want a fireplace in your home quickly, electrical fireplaces have become a “have your cake and eat it too” solution for many Calgary families.
Electric fireplaces and the realistic looking “flame” we’re familiar with have been around since 1981.
Here at Diamond Fireplace, we strive to stock Calgary’s best selection of electric, gas and wood burning fireplaces.
What we’re seeing is an increase in the popularity of the electric fireplaces in Calgary, and for good reason.
Here are 7 reasons Calgary families are choosing electrical fireplaces:
#1 Reason To Own An Electric Fireplace In Calgary: Easy To Instal
It can be as simple as choosing your fireplace model, bringing it home, hanging it on the wall and plugging it in. No installation, renovation or any other logistical considerations.
It doesn’t get any easier than that!
#2 Reason To Own An Electric Fireplace In Calgary: Easy To Maintain & Clean
Did we mention they’re easy?
Not only are electric fireplaces easy to buy and start using right away – they’re also incredibly low maintenance.
You don’t need regular chimney and fireplace cleaning in order to maintain the safety of your electric fireplace in Calgary. The ash, wood and flame free fireplace provides all the benefits of a fireplace, without the traditional maintenance burden.
#3 Reason To Own An Electric Fireplace In Calgary: Energy Efficient
An electric fireplace can heat a room much more quickly and efficiently than the gas or wood burning fireplaces.
Think of your electric fireplace as an attractive space heater. Plus, you won’t need to utilize wood or fuel to fan your flames.
#4 Reason To Own An Electric Fireplace In Calgary: Healthy Breathing
Electric fireplaces simulate, quite realistically, the look of a wood burning or gas fireplace. But because you’re simply plugging your electrical fireplace into a wall outlet, you’re not creating any actual fire, which means no carbon monoxide in your home.
While the trace amounts of carbon monoxide are small enough to be under the levels that would cause concern, some people with asthma, allergies or other breathing considerations may prefer a fireplace without any fumes.
#5 Reason To Own An Electric Fireplace In Calgary: So Many Style Options
Electric fireplaces have come a long way since their invention in 1912.
There are countless style options, one to suit every decor. From logs, to stones inside, to the shape, colour and texture of the frame itself, many electric fireplaces are works of art.
Indeed, when it comes to decorating a room an electric fireplace can provide a stunning focal point.
#6 Reason To Own An Electric Fireplace In Calgary: They’re Extra Safe
If you still want the look, feel and warmth of a traditional fireplace, but you’re worried about the safety of toddlers or pets, perhaps an electric fireplace is a better option for you.
As mentioned, there are zero carbon monoxide emissions, they aren’t hot to the touch or necessarily require constant supervision to utilize.
Because electronic fireplaces simply simulate fire; you can have the benefits, style and coziness of a traditional fire without worrying about burning embers, plumes of smoke or other dangers associated with gas or wood burning fireplaces.
#7 Reason To Own An Electric Fireplace In Calgary: They’re Available At A Lower Price
When you’re looking to instal a wood burning fireplace, you may have to manage considerations and costs associated with moving walls and installing chimneys.
The costs of renovations like these can be significant, and provide a barrier to some Calgary families. Because electronic fireplaces don’t require any kind of chimney or renovation, the total investment for an electric fireplace can be significantly less.
In summary, for some families in Calgary an electric fireplace is simply a better solution than wood burning or gas fireplaces.

How to start a wood fire in a stove or wood insert
January 26, 2016
Here is an article by Napoleon to help you with starting a wood fire.
If you asked the average person how to start a wood fire in a stove , they would most likely say just throw the logs in with a match, and the deed is done. However, how to properly start a fire in a wood burning stove or insert is an exacting science. Great fires start out slow and steady, winning the race and our hearts on chilly evenings, and frosty mornings. In this article we will focus on wood burning stoves and inserts, and the procedure that works best when lighting a roaring fire.
It all starts with a good seasoning
If you’ve read our article on the spectacular science of stacking firewood, then you know that the best type of wood to use in any wood burning fireplace is seasoned dry wood. This is very important, because you want your fire to burn clean, with lots of heat and little smoke. Seasoned wood is commonly used indoors, but some like to use it outdoors for bonfires and regular fire pits. This firewood becomes very light in weight, due to the lack of moisture. This is what you want. A log that is too dense will not light easily, and will cause smoke and an array of scents to disperse through your home.
1. Building blocks
Traditional newspaper is best for kindling, because it is dry, thin, and most importantly flammable. You don’t want to throw magazines or catalogs into a fire because they have thick paper that smokes easily and burns slow, resulting in lots of poisonous fumes. Scrunch the newspaper up and make a layer on the bottom of your stove, before laying the fire. Make sure that you are using split wood when laying a fire, and not round logs. Split wood is easier to light, and it is easier to add round logs after you have a fire going. Round logs are very slow burning, and won’t ignite easily so you want to save those for when you have a steady flame.
2. Stack em high
You want to lay the wood in what I like to call a jenga pattern. Depending on the size, lay the first layer of logs (as many as can fit) vertical, with space in between each log. On the next layer, stack logs horizontally so it looks like this:
A jenga pattern or “log cabin” as some call it is a great approach, because you want lots of exposed area of kindling to ignite when lit. This ensures your fire will rise at a steady pace, and not go up in flames right away like with a teepee style structure. With a log cabin layered fire, it is easier to control how much wood you need to add to your fire gradually, making it last longer and burn brighter.
3. Put the cherry on top
If you have wood chips (not the barbecue kind) or spare wood kindling, sprinkle this on top of your stack of wood, and even around the bottom in order to feed the fire. You can do this step as many times as you feel it is needed throughout using your stove or insert.
Tip: When cutting wood for future “seasoning” store the leftover wood bits and smaller pieces in a dry, warm area to use in the future as kindling.
4. Light ‘er up!
Do a check over to make sure your stove is set to allow the maximum amount of fresh air into the box. Napoleon Wood stoves have a single lever burn control that regulates the air, establishing a clean burn. You want oxygen because flames are attracted to it and will seek it out. Light the newspaper that you crumpled up at the front. Leave the door open for 3 to 5 minutes while everything is settling in. If you close the door too quickly, the fire may be snuffed out. The same goes with a wood burning insert; make sure the flue is left slightly open, allowing the fire to rise. If you have a screen or doors on your insert, leave them open for a little before closing all the way.*
Close the door, and let it go
Once your fire has been burning for a good while, close the door and wait until the fire is really going.
At this time let it get to at least a steady 400°F; this is a good temperature to maintain your fire. Before starting to shut it down, monitor how your fire is burning. It takes a minimum 10 to 15 minutes to reduce the heat, and have your fire die down. Make sure your fire has been established before you start reducing the air, this way no smoke will bellow into the room. Another important factor is to resist keeping a wimpy fire going. You want a strong, hearty fire roaring. If it isn’t cold outside, light your fire before the temperature drops at night, so your home can heat up nicely just in time for cool nighttime. Smoldering fires (when it isn’t strong) are dangerous and pose health hazards to your home, from both creosote and smoke. You also don’t want to waste your firewood.
Clean up
Ashes need to be cleaned out of your stove or insert before using your fireplace, every time. Wait a full day before sweeping them up; ashes are hot and take a long time to cool off. With extreme caution, a set of gloves and a sweep brush, place the ash in a metal bucket, and put it far away from the fireplace, hardwood flooring, carpet, or walls. This is a safety precaution in case the bucket contains any still hot ashes. You also don’t want a bucket of ash laying around for pets or the kids to get into. Rather than keep it in the house, bring it outside and place in the garden or yard. Or learn how to use ash in your home.
* Never ever leave an open wood stove or insert unattended!! This is a serious hazard and a fire, much like a toddler, must have a close eye kept on it. Kindling can spark, and newspaper can fly, so it’s best not to leave that to chance.

7 Steps to BBQing the Best Burger
April 17, 2015
One of the best things about the snow melting and the evenings getting warmer is the chance to bust out your BBQ and get grilling. In this article we want to cover what it takes to grill up the best burger you have ever tasted!
When a burger is grilled right you know it. The perfect char on the outside and the juicy flavour on the inside is all it takes to make you and your family coming back for more.
Here are 7 steps to creating the best burger:
- Season the meat beforehand. You can use a mixture of dried herbs and spices to get the flavours of your beef tasting great. Here’s a tip, though – go easy on the salt! The salt will actually extract moisture from the meat, which is not what you want when looking for that juicy patty.
- Let the flavours mingle. Make sure to prepare your patties well before you plan on cooking them and stack them in the refrigerator (separated by wax paper) for several hours. We recommend making them in the morning if you want to grill them in the evening. This way your flavours get the whole day to mix and mingle into that perfect combination.
- Get the thickness right. A well-formed patty should be about ¾ of an inch thick. Making them thinner or thicker than that may take away from the flavours you are going for.
- Heat the grill first. You don’t want your burgers to start cooking while the grill is still warming up. Make sure to give your grill a 5 or 10 minute head start so that when you slap on those patties the grill is reading to start cooking.
- Turn them once and leave them. While it’s tempting to check on your burgers more than once, the key to really cooking a nice, juicy burger is to leave them alone and only turn them once. Don’t flatten them with your spatula either because then all those yummy juices will come out.
- Add the sauce and melt the cheese. When the burgers are almost done you will want to add your secret sauce – BBQ, soy, teriyaki, etc – and melt the cheese – Cheddar, Brie, Goat, Gorgonzola, etc. This will help pack in even more flavours and get those taste buds watering.
- Don’t forget the toppings. When the burgers finally come off the grill don’t forget to add all of those delicious toppings. This is the time to add ketchup, mayo, lettuce, tomatoes, olives, and anything else you can think of. Harness your inner Picasso and go nuts creating this work of art.
Hungry yet? Nothing says spring and summer like a beautifully grilled burger. These are just 7 steps to help get you on your way.
Decorating Ideas to Make Your Fireplace Pop
March 11, 2015
Last month we shared with you an article on how to update that old brick around your fireplace by using the whitewashing paint technique. While that will definitely help you modernize the look of your fireplace you may find the space around your fireplace is still lacking a certain flare. That’s why this month we wanted to share ideas on how to spice up this area of your home and make it stand out.
6 creative decorating ideas for your fireplace:
- Think about the horizontal space and the vertical space. Most fireplaces have a long, horizontal mantel and hearth where you can add your favourite pictures, statues, or pieces of art, but don’t forget about the vertical space above the mantel. In most cases there is ample space from the top of the mantel to the ceiling in which to add design pieces that will make the space pop.
- Think Big! Sometimes those small trinkets can get lost when looking at your fireplace as a whole. Most of the time, the fireplace takes up a big portion of the wall or room, so compliment that space with bigger pieces, such as vases, framed art, or mirrors. You could even add texture with woven baskets or vases with dried grasses.
- Add Attractive Art. Once again touching on the vertical space above the mantel, this is the perfect place to add a large piece of framed art. Think of the height as well as the width and go for something bold. This will modernize your fireplace instantly, plus bring positive attention to the space.
- Update Your Fire Screen. This is an often over-looked element of your fireplace, but it really shouldn’t be. When it comes to your fire screen you don’t have to leave it as a boring, metal barrier to heat and sparks. There are many companies and local artists who work with metal who could create a personalized piece of art to either sit in front of the screen while it’s not in use, or as an artistic screen itself.
- Reflect The Space. Instead of using art in the vertical space above the mantel you could also use a custom-cut mirror. This will help reflect the other artistic items in the room and will make the whole space feel bigger. Some designers suggest using a chunky-framed mirror so that it doesn’t get lost in the space, but this will really depend on the look of your fireplace.
- Don’t Forget The Lights! While the focus should be on the soft glow coming from the fireplace, you shouldn’t forget about the lighting above the fireplace. Afterall, this is what will make all of your design pieces around the fireplace stand out. If your house was built in the 90’s or before you may have some unattractive track lighting currently casting the spotlight on your fireplace. Replace this with 3-4 pot lights to keep the ceiling clean, to draw light to the right places, and to bring your lighting up to date.
For centuries we have been spending quality time around the fire with family and friends. That is why the fireplace is, and should be, such a central part of your living space. While it’s easy to neglect, we really shouldn’t. Take the time to refresh and recreate this space so that it doesn’t just blend into the room – it creates it!
7 Steps to Whitewashing Your Brick Fireplace
February 20, 2015
Sometimes your brick fireplace can scream a little bit too much 1995. While brick is “in” for the industrial office space look, you may not be loving it as much around the central focal point of your living room – the fireplace. That’s why we’ve pulled together some tips for updating that brick with a nice whitewash; a quick way to bring your fireplace surround into the year 2015.
7 quick steps to whitewashing your fireplace brick:
- Clean the brick – if your brick is still in good condition all it may need is just a little wash. You can use mild dish soap and an old rag to get the dust and dirt off in a flash.
- Create your half & half paint and water mixture – In a large container mix equal parts white paint, preferably eggshell finish because of its rich consistency and water. Depending on how much of the brick you want to show through, you can add more water or less water to your paint.
- Cover your mantel & fireplace insert – This will help avoid paint drops from getting on these surfaces, which will save you from an annoying clean up job later.
- Get painting – Start by applying the paint to the brick, making sure you get in the cracks and border for a consistent look.
- Use a rag to remove excess paint – If you want more of the brick colour to show through, take a rag and remove some of the excess paint from the brick. This will create a blended, uniform look on your brick.
- Do a test run – Just to get a feel for the how this will look, do a test run on a small area of your brick first. Make sure to let the paint settle for a few hours or a day, as the brick will absorb a lot of the paint. This will help you to get a feel for how much paint you want to use over the entire surface.
- Finish it off – Once you are happy with how your test area looks, go ahead and finish off the entire surface. Then step back and admire your work!

5 Wonderful Ways to Create an Ideal Outdoor Living Space
August 11, 2014
When it comes to creating the perfect outdoor living space you have to look no further than your closest indoor retreat for inspiration. We spend a lot of time making sure our bedroom or living room is the ideal oasis for relaxation after a hard day’s work, but there is no reason we can’t take this comfort outside. This month we have put together five simple solutions when it comes to creating that comfortable and inviting outdoor living space, without breaking the bank.
Bring the inside out
Adding a carpet, some chairs, and a piece of wicker furniture or two can easily make your outdoor patio into a comfortable afternoon retreat. You can also add a side table or two for your morning coffee or afternoon tea, and top it off with some cushy pillows and comfy blankets. Pretty soon you won’t want to spend any time indoors because your outdoor room is just too darn comfortable.
Make time to swing
Is there anything better than curling up with a blanket and book in a swaying hammock on a sunny day? We look to pictures of paradise and wish we could make it so, but why not make it happen for your own patio? Installing a rustic swing or rope hammock is the perfect way to enjoy a lazy afternoon reading a book or taking a nap. All it takes is a trip to the hardware store and an hour or two of labour and you’re ready to swing.
Turn that dull wall into a focal point
Who says you have to keep your outdoor walls bare? By adding a new coat of vibrant paint you can immediately bring new life and energy into your outdoor space. Also, don’t be afraid to hang things. Adding a mirror to your outdoor wall will reflect the light and help add to the space. You could also add ornaments found on your beach vacations, or a fountain for the birds. Use whatever you want, just don’t leave it empty.
Set the mood with candles & fountains
Nothing makes you feel like you’re at a spa more than the sound of trickling water. You can create this sound by adding a gurgling fountain to your outdoor living space, making it tranquil and soothing. At night, try adding some candle lanterns around the space for mood lighting. Soon you will feel like you’re relaxing in Mexico instead of Calgary.
Add Heaters to keep you warm at night
As the sun goes down you may want to turn on those heaters in order to keep the cool air at bay. At Diamond Fireplace, we have a wide selection of outdoor heaters that can help keep you nice and warm in the evenings. Propane patio heaters are well-known and are used around Calgary on restaurant patios. These are a great choice for keeping costs low while keeping temperatures high. Another great choice is to use built-in infrared electric heaters. These heaters blend into the environment and keep the focus on the room. They also reduce wasted heat and energy.
Make your outdoor space more like an outdoor oasis with these five simple suggestions. Afterall, why waste our summer days indoors when we can have a luxurious living area just steps away.
Hot Tips: Outdoor Propane Heater Safety
July 15, 2014
It’s been an amazing July here in Calgary. With temperatures reaching close to 30 degrees Celsius during the day, I’m sure air conditioning is more on your mind than heating. That said, while our evenings have been retaining a good amount of heat, it’s common practice here in Calgary to fire up that portable patio heater while enjoy that last glass of wine on the deck. Diamond Fireplace offers two types of patio heaters – electric and propane. It’s the latter that we are going to discuss in more detail today.
As you know, portable patio heaters help us heat up small spaces outdoors. Used in restaurants and homes, they are a very popular piece of equipment needed here in Calgary for those breezy evenings. Because of their popularity, it’s always good to get a refresher on using your heaters safely over the summer. Here are 5 safety tips that we wouldn’t want you to forget:
- Keep the propane cylinder at least six feet away from the heat source, unless it is contained in a space that offers protection from the direct heat. All of our outdoor propane heaters here at Diamond Fireplace offer integrated tank storage for this purpose.
- Keep all propane cylinders not being used at least 20 feet away from the heat source. This way if there is any propane leaking the outdoor air will eliminate the danger before reaching the heat source.
- Keep your propane heater at least 5 feet away from any doorway. This ensures that your guests have ample amount of space between themselves and the heater while moving in and out of your house / restaurant.
- Never use indoors! This is an obvious one, but one that still needs to be said.
- Use extreme caution when using inside or around a tent or cabin. Sometimes we think that the same rules do not apply when we are camping. However, this is not the case. Only use outdoor propane heaters outdoors. Ensure there is proper ventilation at all times, especially when you are sleeping.
Keeping these safety tips in mind will help ensure an enjoyable and warm summer here in Calgary. Enjoy!
